Medication Given At School
July 12, 2007
The administration of medication to children at school is discouraged and restricted to necessary medication that cannot be given on an alternative schedule. When medicine is to be administered by school personnel, the medicine must be accompanied by a label affixed by the pharmacy or physician showing:
• the name of the child
• name of the medication
• dosage and schedule of administration
• physician’s name
In each case, there must be written orders from the child’s physician for extended medication on special cases and written request asking that the medication be given. This information must go to the school nurse. Administration of medicine to a pupil when the above conditions have been met must be limited to the school nurse, or a person designated by the school nurse; all trained to administer medication as prescribed. It is preferred that medication be brought to school by a parent, guardian, or authorized responsible adult, not the child.
Any over the counter medication must be in the original container. A note signed by a parent must accompany the medication. The dosage and time to be given must be in the notes. Medication improperly labeled will not be given.
