Bayless Elementary School: Staff: Second Grade

Bayless Elementary Second Grade

November 16, 2006

Miss Habermehl's class!

Second grade is a year of immense growth and development in preparation into the transition into the Intermediate Building.  Below is a brief summary of the main topics that will be covered in a student’s second grade year.

Topics taught in second grade:

Math- The students will learn double digit adding and subtracting, the beginnings of fractions, money concepts, multiple strategies for solving words problems, patterns, and telling time.

Science- This year science topics will include: animals, force, motion, sound, rocks, earth materials, and general science concepts.

Writing- The students will continue to write using the 5 step writing process, the same as the process used in first grade.  Students will write both fiction and non-fiction stories.  The students will engage in conferences with peers and with the teacher to improve writing skills.

Literacy- Each day, students will participate in learning centers that will foster reading and writing development.  During this time, students will meet with the teacher during guided reading groups.  The students will be introduced to books that correspond with their reading level.  In the groups, students will work on strategies in word attack, comprehension, and fluency.  Also, each day there will be at least thirty minutes devoted to a word concept during word study. This could be word patterns, word meaning, etc.
