Kindergarten Overview
By Mary Fink and Amy Davis
November 20, 2006
At the beginning of the year we focus on letters and sounds and name recognition. We also introduce colors and shapes and begin on learning counting and number recognition. Kindergartners are also exposed to writing what sounds they hear in words and sentence structure. The twenty-five kindergarten sight words are brought in throughout the year and are usually mastered by May. Guided reading groups begin after the winter holiday break. The majority of the students are reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. Science lessons include the changing seasons, plant and animal growth, and the environment.
