Since 1999, Missouri NEA has sponsored a Cat in the Hat tour to help inspire reading in Missouri’s youth. The National Education Association’s nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on and around March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
Bayless Elementary which is a PreK – 2nd grade building is proud to have been chosen to receive one the special Cat Track Tours this year! On Monday, March 1st, Chris Guinther the Missouri NEA President, and the “real” Cat in the Hat will make a special appearance at a school-wide assembly scheduled for 2:30-3:00 p.m. in the gymnasium. Mrs. Guinther will speak to the students about the importance of reading and share interesting facts about Dr. Seuss.
Students and the Cat in the Hat will play “Say That Seuss Story!” Groups of staff members will act out various Dr. Seuss books through drama, song, and props while students and The Cat in the Hat try to guess the book titles. With each correct answer, students will turn over a word to reveal a “Seuss Secret.”
Bayless Elementary was recognized last spring as a Missouri School of Character and National School of Character finalist. As one of our many service projects, students and staff began collecting “Seuss Cents” at the beginning of February. All of the coins collected will be combined prior to the assembly and presented to the Cat in the Hat when the “Seuss Secret” or grand total is revealed. The money will be used to purchase Dr. Seuss books and given to needy children. Bayless Elementary students are truly caring and “seuss”sational!
